HOW GEOTHERMAL WORKS

Typical vertical geothermal loop system
Typical horizontal geothermal loop system
The term "geothermal heating" is used to refer to the heaitng/cooling that is derived by the use of a geothermal heat pump. Inthe heating mode, involves pumping cool waer through a series of pipes (referred to as a loop and often containing non toxic antifreeze) buried under ground. As the water curculates through these under ground pipes, it absorbs heat from the ground where it it exteacted via the unit's heat exchanger and delivered to the sturcture as warm air. By switching the directions of the flow, the same systems is used to reject heat and circulate cooled air when needed in the summer months.
